"When I went to school in the late 60's, they didn't know about Dyslexia. I was put in a class call Educable Mentally Handicapped (EMH). They didn't know what to do with children like us, so we passed to the next grade. Finally, in 1976 I graduated 8th grade then I went to high school. They put me in the same classes so in 1978 I dropped out of school and went to the working world. I held different jobs but no one knew that I had a learning problem. I was a law enforcement officer from 1989 until 2014. I wrote down words that I used every day. In 2014, I met a young lady on Facebook. I retired from being a law enforcement officer after 25 years and moved to Pierre, South Dakota. I told her I didn't have my high school diploma so she took me to The Right Turn (TRT). Then I took a placement test I did ok, but the person who gave me the placement test asked if I am dyslexic. I told her no I'm not. She told me you have all the signs of Dyslexia. I told her I was never tested for it. So in 2015 we went to Spearfish to the Black Hills Psychologist who tested me. They found that I have dyslexia. So my GED teacher asked me if I wanted to try a new program call Barton Reading and Spelling program. So for the next three years. I went through the Barton program and continued working on my GED. Finally, on June 3rd, 2021 I'm a part of the class of 2021."
